Sustainability Reporting: the main success factors and challenges at SwissRe

Sustainability Reporting: the main success factors and challenges at SwissRe

ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) regulations and standards are rapidly emerging, imposing new and complex reporting requirements which impact companies across the globe. Regulators and supervisors are increasing their oversight efforts. Litigation targeting companies’ ESG commitments regarding potential greenwashing and in parallel, disclosure practices are on the rise.

With the transition from voluntary to mandatory, substantiated and auditable disclosure of sustainability information (e.g., Responsible Business Initiative counterproposal, CSRD), Swiss Re has established a Sustainability Reporting Initiative, aiming to advance its sustainability reporting processes in the areas of governance, methodology, data and technology.

In this webinar, Swiss Re and BearingPoint shared insights from this regulatory driven sustainability reporting initiative from a data and technology perspective. Reflecting on their experience, they discussed data and technology architecture, data management and data governance, including

  • The importance of defining guiding principles, for example when deciding on a centralized versus decentralized data management approach.

  • Defining roles and responsibilities, processes and controls as early as possible and involving all impacted stakeholders to ensure ownership and commitment.

  • Considering existing capabilities for the target architecture and remaining flexible with a modular and incremental approach to solution implementation.
